out post sound was initially set up in Fiveways in the north end of Brighton after managing director Rob Speight discovered there was a real gap in the market for audio post in the city. However, after many of the larger companies in London started going bust last year, out post’s client base has since become the target of many of the capital’s remaining post companies in a bid to break out of London and generate new revenue. As a result, Speight has expanded his business, and can now accommodate clients on the coast and in the big smoke, with the addition of a London base.
“I noticed there were a lot of video companies in Brighton, but no obvious post production places; people were doing it in their bedrooms, but not on the level I was thinking about,” Speight reveals. “Business has been good for us in Brighton, but when the London companies started targeting our business down south after Videosonics and the like had gone bust, I realised we really needed a presence in London. We couldn’t compete with these guys’ fancy suites, and it was becoming increasingly harder to pick stuff up.”
Speight’s London base is located on Wardour Street, nearby many of London’s post facilities. He believes that the cache of being in the capital has helped generate more business, especially in TV and film.
“We’ve worked with 20th Century Fox, the Discovery Channel, the BBC, and all the broadcasters in the UK actually,” he says. “But TV is even harder than working on features – they don’t even like going south of the river, let alone south of the country!”
Although the expansion seems to be reaping the benefits already, Speight points out that business has begun to boom down south as well.
“Ironically, since we’ve secured the London space, we have had a lot of clients wanting to work out of Brighton,” he says. “There’s a lot of talent in Brighton, and from a voiceover perspective, it seems people want to do it there.”

I want to record a voice over - but I am not sure where to start!
28-06-11
Many people assume that recording a voice over is a simple process. Yet, like most things, the best voice overs are a combination of a few but crucial ingredients. In this overview we will explain everything you need to know about recording a voice over or narration and how out post sound can help you achieve the result you wanted.
The Ingredients
1 x Voice Over Artist
1 x Great Script
1 x Experienced Sound Studio
THE VOICE OVER ARTIST To get the best possible effect from your piece you need the best voice to match the message you want to convey. It is pointless having a quiet, subtle voiceover for a hard hitting documentary for example. We understand that the choice of VO (voice over) artists online can be overwhelming and this is where we can help. We at out post sound have been working closely with voice over artists for over five years and have a broad selection available in our own database. We can help you cast the voice over artist that you need to get your production sounding great.
THE SCRIPT Of course, it is all for nought if your script is lousy. Scripts need to be concise and punchy. For radio commercials they need to get the whole point across in 30 seconds or less. For television you need a voice over that compliments the footage and for this the script is key! If you already have a script then send it over. We can look at it and give you an expert opinion on length, time required to record and edit and how, if necessary, it can be tightened up to give you the most professional read possible.
THE STUDIO When it comes to recording a lone voice it is surprising that it is actually harder than recording an ensemble, band or group. Why? Because a lone vocal is naked. A lone vocal is exposed and problems become much more noticeable. That is why we at out post believe that we highly skilled in recording a voice over that not only sounds great but at the same time is not noticeable. See the dichotomy? The best voice over is one that sounds natural both in delivery, script and technical excellence and that is where out post sound can help.
The Method
Dig around looking for your ideal voice over artist. Can’t find them? Then let us help you cast you ideal voice. We can draw on both our years of experience, contacts and also our ever expanding database of voice over talent. We can take a brief from you and send you a selection that match your requirements instead of you having to spend hours trawling the net or even worse, speaking to agents!
Hone your script. Edit, edit and re-edit. Make sure it is tight. Make sure it gets across what you want and how you want it. Let out post sound look at it and give free advice. We are here to help and we can help you to hear!
Finally, the day of the recording. You are in Manchester (or Paris if you are lucky) we are in London or Brighton and you voice over talent is with us. How can this work? Traveling all the way to Brighton sound like a hassle. This may be true, but there are many options that mean you can join in and direct or listen in on the session from the comfort of your own chair.
Option 1 - Give us a brief and we will direct, record and edit, matching it to picture if necessary or script.
Option 2 - Hire a studio in your location and connect to us either via ISDN II or Source Connect. Hear the recording session in our location in full quality at your end. Interact with the voice over artist and recording engineer at out post and record the audio your end.
Option 3 - Use your good old fashioned telephone and call us at the time of the session. We can patch you straight into the recording where you can talk to both the voice over artist and studio engineer (or anyone else in the studio for that matter). You can direct or just listen in from the comfort of your own arm chair. We record the audio, edit if required, and send you the edited version or all of the takes via FTP or YouSendIt after the session has finished.
Option 4 - Connect to us using most instant messenger clients including MSN Messenger, Skype, aMSN, Yahoo, AIM or iChat. We can, as in option 3, patch you into the recording session and send you the finished audio.
The Conclusion
You end up with a great voice over or narration delivered by a professional voice over artist, recorded by a studio that has passion and expertise in getting the best from the talent and the technology and flexibility to allow you to interact and be involved from anywhere in the world.
Why would you want to go anywhere else?

out post becomes de-facto standard for voice overs
14-03-11
out post sound is becoming the defacto standard when it comes to doing voice overs in Brighton.
There are many other studios in the city, but out post is without a doubt a cut above the rest. Offering technology including Source Connect (voice over IP with a better quality than ISDN), ISDN itself - our ISDN II line is increasingly in demand with the likes of the BBC and LateRooms.com and of course all the options we offer for directors or clients to dial in a listen or direct a session remotely including via telephone, MSN, Yahoo, Aim, iChat etc.
All this technology coupled with our recently upgraded vocal booth, Neumann microphones and of course Pro Tools HD at its core, out post sound is the place that broadcasters, film makers and games producers increasingly come to record quality dialogue.
So, give us a call or drop us a line and ask about our fantastic rates now!
We have just worked on a fun and challenging project for well known Brighton based band, The Levellers. The 'Folk-Punk' band are playing a sold out tour to celebrate 20 years of their seminal album, 'Levelling the Land'.
The band, which have sold over 1 million albums nice the late 1980s, commissioned a short video documentary to be shown before all of their gigs on the tour and out post were asked to complete the dub.
The footage, most of which was very old and with highly compression audio sound tracks was melded with more recent HD footage of controversial news events including the tuition fee riots in London and the Egyptian revolution.
Using many of the tools available, including noise reduction, standard equalisation and compression, lots of automated EQ and a whole load of other things we'd really rather not get into, we managed to make the whole thing listenable and suitable to be plated in venues as big as Brixton Academy on the tour.
Bassist and Tour Manager, Jeremy Cunningham, commented: "Intro worked perfect thanks. Plenty of panto boos and yays! All good. Good show. Thanks for all your hard work."
While Phil went on to say: "Well done. Worked really well. Excellent start to the show and tour. Lo-res adds to the authenticity. Audio is the key to it!"
The documentary produced by Dandy Films and edited by Jim Scott can be seen at all the gigs on the tour, more information on which is availablehere
Not in my cuppa - out post voices Mega Dairy concerns
19-01-11
out post sound was recently asked to voice "Not in my cuppa", a campaign video to shine a light on the proposed Mega Dairy construction in the UK.
The film and the campaign in general, produced by Brighton based EcoStorm, has received a great deal of press around the UK and the film was also shown at the Houses of Parliament in London.
Voiced by one of our regular VO's, Briggy Smale, we are pleased that the film is having such an impact.
Sound design for 'The Call Of Cthulhu' hit with critics
26-08-10
out post sound recently worked with a local Brighton actor, Michael Sabbaton to create a soundscape for his Edinburgh Fringe adaptation of HP Lovecraft's classic tale of horror: "The Call of Cthulhu".
Working closely with Sabbaton, sound designer Rob Speight, developed a detailed soundscape to compliment the one man show. The performance, at the Hill Street Theatre, has met with constantly good reviews and audiences.
The sound design was also mentioned in some of the reviews, so we thought we would share the highlights with you here!
"A remarkable soundtrack designed and created by Rob Speight adds layer on top of layer of atmosphere and foreboding and the lighting that never gets above dim adds another nerve jangling element into the mix." - EdinburghGuide.com
"Fog, dingy lighting and a superb soundscape – incorporating off-kilter alien rumblings and the many moods of water, from gentle rain to raging surf – conjure an atmosphere of oppressive, gloomy, creeping dread." - BritishTheatreGuide.info
"Sound design is particularly effective in Call of Cthulhu, with deep, foreboding sounds of menace creating the perfect mood of unspeakable things and nameless horror" - EdinburghSpotlight.com

Successful audio post production house, out post sound, has now completely separated it's retail sales activities into a new arm under the banner of out post distribution.
out post sound, well known for it's high quality, cost effective audio post services has also been the exclusive UK distributer of Punchlight automatic Cue Light and Timecode display systems for nearly three years. The success of Punchlight has seen the company sell to Bang Post Production in Cardiff, Waves Studio in London and the Beijing Film Academy as well as many other international clients.
"We decided to split the sales into out post distribution to ensure that customers of our audio post services do not get confused about what our core business is, which of course is our work in the film, television and gaming markets. However, we want to drive the retail side forward and so splitting the company seemed the ideal option and has met with a very positive response," explained Managing Director, Rob Speight.
As part of launch out post distribution is offering 25% discount across the Punchlight range for the whole of August and in addition has taken on products from the likes of Audient, Digigram, Avatone and Benchmark.

In addition, he also completed a feature length article for Pro Sound News Europe discussing the technology behind bringing festivals to air from an audio perspective. The feature is in this months issue of PSN.

We've run with wolves, we've climbed K2, even stopped a moving train, we've traveled through space and time my friends to rock this house again……
No, hang on that 's Tenacious D!
However, we have gone from strength to strength, and worked with some amazing clients and are excited that the end of 2009 and beginning of 2010 has many great projects in the pipeline.

out post sound shortlisted for business awards
27-08-09
out post sound has been shortlisted in the Best New Business (or New Kids on The Block) category in the Brighton and Hove Business Awards 2009. out post saw off stiff competition to get into the final four and we are looking forward to the awards ceremony on the 9th of October at the Brighton Hilton Metropole Hotel.
The BAHBA’s website states: “The award for “New Kids on the Block”, sponsored by Royal Mail, remains the most popular category of all and shows that, despite the recession, Brighton is still home to a number of successful start-ups.” With any luck, or at least our wit, charm and good looks we can clinch the award on the night - if only so we can practice our acceptance speech for when we go and collect a BAFTA.
We shall wait to see if we have the right stuff to win the award — and as the New Kids on the Block said themselves, in their timeless classic, ‘The Right Stuff’: “Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. Oh, oh, oh, oh. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. The right stuff.” Pure Class!
out post sound has completed work on Kevin Costner’s new feature film, The New Daughter. out post was approached by Gold Circle Films in Los Angeles (producers of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Slither, White Noise) and post production house Sharpe Sound in Vancouver to record ADR for Brighton based actor Noah Taylor (Pirates of The Caribbean, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Tomb Raider), who plays Professor White in the film.
Utilising Pro Tools 8 and Source Connect out post connected to Sharpe Sound and carried out the session under the watchful eye of Director Luis Berdejo. The session was then run in Transport Lock Mode enabling Berdejo to hear every take in sync with the temp tracks on Sharpe Sound’s Pro Tools System.
“This was without doubt our biggest movie to date and it will certainly help to place out post firmly on the map while adding to my continued belief that film post production service providers can exist and thrive in Brighton,” explained ADR recording engineer and Managing Director Rob Speight.
out post sound has recently upgraded it's main Pro Tools HD system to Pro Tools 8. As part of the upgrade the company has also invested in Sony Oxford and Massey plugins to add to it's arsenal.
To ensure compatibility, out post can now run Pro Tools version 8 and 7.3, so previous clients and clients running on the older system can still be provided the same quality service.

out post sound provided a full post production service for the film including dialogue editing, ADR, sound effect design and editing and premixing in 5.1 surround. Rob Speight, Managing Director at out post commented: “This has been by far our biggest project to date and the three months of work on the film were quite frantic. However, out post has proved once again that we can tackle large projects and provide a quality finished product. We are currently gearing up for an even bigger feature project later in the year, for which we have assembled a team drawn from some of the larger post houses that have closed in London over the last year or so. Our physical expansion in the next few months will also see us being able to continue to bring post production work out of London and into Brighton saving clients pockets and drawing on the huge amount of talent in the city and surrounding areas.”

The Voice of Christmas - out post sound completes work on BBC One Christmas special.

The session, which was engineered for out post by Rob Speight using a Pro Tools HD system, was the most high profile job yet for the barely year old company.
“We are very happy to have worked on ‘Dustbin Baby’ and it is very exciting to be working alongside Clarity Post Production for Kindle Entertainment. This particular job, along with others we have recently completed for CNBC Europe and Channel Five, re-affirms my belief that Brighton can develop into a television and film production hub, similar to Manchester and Cardiff,” said Speight.
‘Dustbin Baby’ is due to air on BBC One between Christmas and New Year.
out post has just celebrated it's first full year of trading and a relieved and ecstatic staff party (would) have followed if only we had not been so busy we totally forgot!

out post gets connected with Source Elements, Source Connect
18-10-08
out post sound has recently invested in Source Elements, Source Connect version 3.0 allowing the studio to provide remote recording sessions both from and to out posts facility.
The plug in for Pro Tools allows audio to be sent and received transparently across a standard broadband connection. out post invested in the new software for a series of sessions with Italian based Networks s.r.l.
Networks is a global network of recording studios, voice talent, translation agencies and translators that specialises in voiceovers and dubbing (recording via ISDN and broadband link) and translations/adaptations in over 60 languages. Key areas include advertising, e-learning, corporate communications, documentaries, multimedia/rich media, languages courses, films and videos, sales material, audio books, video games, cartoons, and material for conventions and conferences.
out post sound can now also connect with studios and voice over talent around the globe bringing that distant voice over talent to Brighton!
In addition, it is possible to bridge Source Connect over ISDN allowing the software and out post to link up with anyone using old fashioned (we like to think we are progressive!) ISDN lines.
For more information on a Source Connect session with out post sound or just to find out more about what we do drop us a line or call the studio on 01273 556894.
Sixty Voice Overs, One Commercial and rescuing the rescuers - we make good tea as well!
30-09-08
out post sound has had a busy couple of weeks. From commercials, trailers and an invasion of drama school actors, the company has been putting it's diverse talents to work on several interesting projects.
At very short notice, we recorded the voice over for a trailer promoting a new DVD from the RNLI – the Royal National Lifeboat Institute. Isle of Wight based, The Knowledge Zone, approached out post late one evening and the finished recording and editing was back on the FTP by 2pm the following day for laybacks. Utilising local voice over talent, Michael Sabbaton, out post were able to turn the job around double quick.
Unfortunately for us, but fortunately for our clients, we have become very adept at short notice turn arounds; and The Back Show radio commercial was no exception. Having submitted a script to media agency MWI South, a week later we were asked to present the script to the client, F2F Events, at 6:30pm. The client agreed to go ahead by 7:00pm, however due to the nature of the event – all about back pain and treatments – the script had to make its way through the RACC – commercial radios advertising clearance body – whose published turn around time is 24 hours. With the commercial needing to be with Smooth FM’s traffic department by 2pm the next day, the chances of getting clearance, a voice over artist, recording and producing the commercial in less than a day was looking unlikely.
Out post decided to record several different versions of the potentially unclear-able sentences in an attempt to keep the clients costs down and cover all eventualities. However, the RACC pulled a fast one, returning the script by 11am the next morning – right in the middle of the voice over session. The commercial was completed and at Smooth before the 2pm deadline and everyone had a little lie down!
Finally, in one of our biggest juggling acts, out post played host to 60 up and coming voice over talents – drama school kids ranging from six up to the grand old age of 17. Over two evening sessions, out post and Italian clients Networks Srl, completed the 60 voice over auditions, at no more than 15 minutes each, into two large Pro Tools sessions. Working with the client’s producer, out post managed to keep track of who was where on which track with the schedule changing by the minute.
We were amazed at the smoothness of both sessions, both of which finished on time – unbelievably – with everyone recorded and the sessions copied for the client – who was very happy with the results – Managing Director of Networks Srl said in an email after the sessions: “I just wanted to thank you personally for all your hard work last week. Your bedside manner with the kids was great, the system worked
(as in I can identify all the voices quickly and easily)”
We are now working with Networks to establish recording sessions via Source Connect to their base in Italy. Source Connect is a fantastic Pro Tools plug-in from Source Elements allowing high quality, bi-directional, error corrected audio recording over the Internet. Beats ISDN hands down and is much cheaper in the long run – unfortunately it requires two systems with the same software at each end – still beggars can’t be choosers.
So, if you have a short notice job that requires 60 voice over artists you know who to call! If we’re sensible we might be out, but give us a try…
out post has recently completed more voice over work for Eco Storm - a leading investigative agency specialising in environmental, human rights and animal welfare issues.
out post completed the second job for Eco Storm, who have a contract with the Ecologist to provide monthly films for their website.

Eco Storm's Louise Peim also visited the studio acting as producer for the session.
out post vividly remembers cracking comprehension
18-08-08
out post has just completed one of it's biggest voice over sessions to date. Working with Vivid Interactive, out post recorded and edited 35 pieces of text including poetry, prose and debate for an interactive DVD called 'Cracking Comprehension', which Vivid are developing for their London based client, Rising Stars.
Using four voice over artists, two of which were 14, one of whom had never recorded a voice over before, the job ran across two days with recording engineer Rob Speight working until 4:30am to get the edit completed in time for a beta version to go to the client the following day.
out post have also been working with another interactive media company, FutureMedia, of late completing voice over work for workplace training.
Anyone wishing to beat Vivid Interactive by recording longer at out post is encouraged to contact us on 01273 556894 for a quote.
In the meantime Rob has gone off to a quiet, dark room for a lie down.
In collaboration with Michael Cowan of Spice Factory, labeled as the UK's Miramax, Rob Speight, MD of out post sound has started a unique networking event - The Brighton Film and Television Network (BFTN) - which brings together professionals working in the industry to discuss projects, form alliances and develop creativity.
The network, which saw its first event held in Brighton on the 1st August, is aimed purely at those working in the industry and is invite only.
Speight said: "There are many many networking events in Brighton and many organisations for the development of new talent, but nothing that allows those already in the industry to meet and interact; let alone try to develop Brighton as a production hub in a similar vein to London, Manchester or Cardiff. So, although some may see this event as elitist, that is not our intention. We believe new and upcoming talent already has a significant support network in Brighton with Lighthouse and Screen South to name but two. BFTN is leaving these organisations to do what they are good at while we try to develop something different."
The first event, which attracted around 30 people from production and facility houses as well as directors, producers and screenwriters was a total success and Michael and I hope to develop the network further inviting more and more people and companies to come along and join in.

out post completes two interesting jobs for new clients
12-12-06
out post sound recently completed two jobs for slightly unusual clients. The first for Sussex based law firm DMH Stallard, which involved cleaning, editing and converting a lecture session originally recorded at the London Stock Exchange on Minidisc into a downloadable PodCast. The second for PriceWaterHouse Cooper Forensic Division involved a new departure for the company. Taking several recordings of interviews from cassette and removing excessive amounts of background noise and interference introduced by a faulty cassette recorder. The tapes were also timecoded and the resulting cleaned audio was used in the investigation of financial fraud - not something we were anticipating being involved in when we formed the company!
