Come on all... it's that time again... we really can't let the government slash the BBC in the shortsighted, point scoring way they are with everything else in the UK!
Please sign up with 38 Degrees and support the BBC by writing to your MP via the website:
You can even use my letter as a template if you wish:
Dear [INSERT YOUR MP's NAME HERE],
I saw Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt threatening to cut the BBC’s licence fee this weekend. The BBC isn’t perfect, but it’s worth protecting.
The BBC, apart from being a centre for impartial news and cultural diversity should be at the cornerstone of the British media. It is respected across the world and we are very lucky that we have this unique resource, which is continually being politicised in order to score cheap, quick points.
Do we really want a media landscape such as that in the USA where big corporations control the news? It is extremely important to have a balanced media and one that also contributes to the cultural diversity of the country by commissioning programming that otherwise, in a strictly commercial environment, would never get made.
I would appreciate if you would raise these issues with Mr Hunt and:
1. Explain that the BBC is worth every penny and detail my arguments above.
2. Ensure a full and frank discussion is held in the House of Commons on this subject and that, if necessary, the public are able to have their say in the future of the BBC just as they did with Radio 6.
3. Tell me what you’ll do as my MP to stand up for the BBC and protect it from cuts.
Thanks you in advance,
